MCG to host historic fixture during 2024/25 cricket season

Wednesday, March 27, 2024

As the birthplace of Test cricket, the MCG is proud to host a number of highly anticipated international cricket fixtures across the 2024/25 summer including the venue’s historic first ever day-night Test match and first women’s Test match played at the ‘G in more than 75 years.

Formally announced today by Cricket Australia CEO Nick Hockley at the MCG, Australia will face England from January 30 – February 2, 2025 as part of the Women’s Ashes Series in what will be the first women’s Test held at the MCG since 1949 and the first ever day-night Test match held at the stadium.

On November 4, 2024, the ‘G will host the opening match of the Men’s international summer, with Australia to face Pakistan in a day-night ODI before the home team return to face India and contest the Border-Gavaskar Trophy from December 26, with the visitors making a welcome return to the Boxing Day Test for the first time since 2020.

Melbourne Cricket Club CEO Stuart Fox said hosting the day-night Test is a significant announcement in the MCG’s history while the return of India to the Boxing Day Test will reignite a great rivalry.

“We are thrilled with Cricket Australia's announcement and we can't wait to be a part of this special summer of cricket," Mr Fox said.

“It's been over 75 years since a women's Test match was played here at the MCG and we can't wait to welcome Australia and England back onto the hallowed turf for a historic day-night Test - the first in the stadium's history.

“The 2020 ICC Women's T20 World Cup was an incredible event for us - this set a new record for a female sporting match at the 'G and we hope to see Australia and England set a new benchmark for attendance at a women's Test match.”

"The Boxing Day Test is always a highly anticipated sporting event and we can't wait to see India return to the 'G for the first time since 2020 when we were only able to welcome reduced crowds due to the pandemic.

"When India played Pakistan during the ICC Men's T20 World Cup in 2022, the atmosphere in the stadium was unrivalled - the noise, the passion, the dedication from all fans both locally and those who travelled was phenomenal to witness.

"With huge fan followings of the Australian and Indian sides, we expect the momentum and rivalry to continue to build as we get closer to one of the most cherished events at the 'G.”

Tickets for these matches will be available from June 4 (Australian Cricket Family member pre-sale) and June 14 (general public) via Ticketek.
