Anniversary Test Match set to renew historic rivalry

Sunday, August 18, 2024

The Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) is thrilled to announce that Cricket Australia and Cricket Victoria have confirmed a new seven-year agreement ensuring that the iconic Boxing Day Test will remain at the MCG from the 2024/25 season through to 2030/31.

An exciting feature of this agreement is the 150th Anniversary Test match, set to be held at the MCG in March 2027. This historic event will celebrate cricket's rich legacy with a special one-off match between Australia and England, marking 150 years since the first Test at the MCG and 50 years since the unforgettable Centenary Test—an iconic chapter in the long-standing rivalry between the two nations.

Melbourne Cricket Club CEO Stuart Fox expressed his excitement about the event, stating, "We are honoured to have the opportunity to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the first-ever International Test Match at the MCG. This milestone is a fitting tribute to the rich history of cricket at the 'G and we are committed to ensuring it will be a memorable occasion for all involved."

He added, "Those who were present for the Centenary Test in 1977 remember it with deep affection. We are confident that the 150th Anniversary Test will evoke similar sentiments."

In addition to this milestone event, the MCG will retain its traditional Boxing Day Test for the next seven years, cementing the stadium’s significance to the cricketing landscape.

This announcement follows the earlier confirmation that the MCG will host its first-ever Day-Night Ashes Test match when the Australia women’s side takes on England from January 30 – February 2, 2025. This will be the first women’s Test at the MCG since the 1948/49 season and the first ever Day-Night Test at the MCG.

Mr Fox said that these announcements highlight the MCG’s ongoing commitment to hosting premier cricket events for fans and members.

“We have always maintained regular dialogue with Cricket Australia and Cricket Victoria and we’re extremely pleased the combination of the MCG’s large capacity and storied history will see the Boxing Day Test remain at the ‘G for at least another seven years,” he said.

“We have an incredible summer packed with cricket, starting in late October with our first Sheffield Shield match, followed by a One-Day International match, BBL and WBBL matches, the Boxing Day Test before we end with the historic Day/Night Women’s Test when Australia faces England in the Ashes Series."
