The Melbourne Cricket Club, as ground manager of the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), is thrilled to welcome fans back to the iconic venue for the pinnacle of the summer cricket schedule in Australia - the Boxing Day Test.
The second test of the series between Australia and South Africa begins on Monday December 26, and is 14 years since Australia last faced South Africa for the Boxing Day Test at the MCG.The much anticipated opening day of the Test on December 26 will have added significance this year with a series of tributes dedicated to Australian cricketing icon Shane Warne.
The Boxing Day Test provided some of Warne’s most cherished career highlights, including his Ashes hat-trick in 1994 and his 700th wicket at the MCG in 2006.
Warne will be honoured with a number of special tributes on Day 1 including:
- Both teams to wear a floppy hat at the national anthem ceremony
- Warne’s floppy hat and ball featured on a plinth on the teams’ path to the ceremony
- Warne’s Test cap number 350 to be painted square of the wicket for the duration of the Test match
- At 3:50pm on Boxing Day a graphic of Warne will be displayed on the big screens
- A special highlights package will play across the MCG’s screens and across the broadcast
Event information
The first session on Day 1 will commence at 10.30am with both public and MCC Members’ Reserve gates to open at 9.00am, before the official ceremony at 10.00am.The Australian Sports Museum, located inside Gate 3 of the MCG, will be open during the Test series.

Help keep the ‘G clean
As this is one of the largest events hosted by the MCG, fans are being asked to throw their support behind the MCG’s commitment to reducing its environmental impact.The MCG has more than 250 bin cabinets around the seating bowl and external concourse, and more than 1500 recycling and waste bins located inside the venue.
All fans are encouraged to appropriately dispose of their waste at each break of play.
Multi-faith prayer room
The MCG Multi-Faith Prayer Room will be open to all patrons.The Multi-Faith Prayer Room is located on Level B1 of the Shane Warne Stand (behind approximately M13 and M14).The facility is able to cater for more than 50 patrons at one time, and is suitable for patrons of all faiths including Christian, Muslim, Jewish and Hindu.
The Multi-Faith Prayer Room is accessible for all patrons from across the stadium, regardless of where they are seated.
G-Train Mobility Shuttle Service
The G-Train Mobility Shuttle Service operates during public events held at the MCG.The service is free and accessible to patrons with mobility challenges and also features vehicles with wheelchair-friendly access.
Pre-booking is not required; simply wait at a designated pick up point for the next available buggy. The service has pick up points from the following locations:
- Richmond Station
- Jolimont Station
- Accessible Parking Area
