The Melbourne Cricket Club (MCC), ground manager of the MCG, is excited to host up to 25,000 fans for each match of Round 15 of the 2021 AFL Premiership Season.
Crowds will return to matches at the MCG for the first time in over a month, with Port Adelaide’s one-goal thriller over Collingwood on May 23 the last match with fans in attendance. The MCG will host the two original matches scheduled for Round 15 – between Richmond and St Kilda on Friday night, and Essendon and Melbourne on Saturday – as well as an additional clash between GWS GIANTS and Hawthorn.
The match, originally scheduled at the GIANTS Stadium in Sydney, has been relocated due to the evolving COVID-19 situation in New South Wales.
The MCG will operate under the MCC’s Victorian Government endorsed COVIDSafe Event Plan, which includes dividing the MCG into five zones, cashless payments and capacity limits in food and beverage facilities. Face masks must be worn by patrons at all times, except when seated in their allocated seat.
Further information on visiting the MCG and COVIDSafe measures can be found here.
MCC CEO, Stuart Fox, said the Club is looking forward to seeing fans back in the stands.
“To be able to have 25,000 passionate fans in the stands is a great starting point as we navigate out of the latest COVID-19 restrictions in Melbourne,” Mr Fox said.
“We have absolute confidence in our operations and our carefully thought-out COVIDSafe Event Plan, which has served us well throughout the summer of cricket and beginning of the 2021 AFL Premiership Season.”
“We are also looking forward to welcoming GWS and Hawthorn to the MCG for Sunday’s match, and send our best wishes to everyone in Sydney in wake of the recent COVID-19 outbreak. We know it’s not fun to have a match relocated due to COVID, but look forward to seeing another great game of footy at the ‘G on Sunday.”
