Sunday, September 22, 2019

The GWS GIANTS have qualified for its first ever Toyota AFL Grand Final appearance after stunning Collingwood in the First Preliminary Final.

The GIANTS will face off against Richmond in the season decider next Saturday afternoon after the Tigers were too strong for the Geelong Cats on Friday night to qualify for their second Grand Final in three seasons.

It will be the second finals meeting between the GIANTS and Richmond with their only previous encounter coming in the 2017 Second Preliminary Final, which the Tigers won by 36 points in front of a crowd of 94,258.

The GIANTS nail-biting four point victory over Collingwood was their first finals win at the MCG in their third visit to the home of football in September.

The GIANTS are the first team to reach the Grand Final after finishing the Toyota AFL Premiership Season in sixth spot on the ladder since Carlton in 1999.

They are also just the fourth team overall to qualify for the season decider from outside the top four since the top eight was introduced in 1994.

The others are the Adelaide Crows (fifth, 1998) and Western Bulldogs (seventh, 2016). Both those teams went onto win the Grand Final.

The Tigers have previously contested 22 Grand Finals and victory will secure them their 12th VFL/AFL Premiership and their second flag in three seasons.

They split their meetings this season, with the GIANTS winning in Round 3 and Richmond comfortably in Round 17.

Richmond has won eight of the overall 12 contests against the GIANTS, since GWS joined the competition in 2012.

The 2019 Toyota AFL Grand Final begins at 2.30pm on Saturday, September 28.
