Fans urged to arrive early for grand final

Wednesday, September 28, 2016

With a crowd of up to 100,000 people expected to attend Saturday's Sydney Swans v Western Bulldogs AFL Grand Final at the MCG, fans are strongly advised to arrive early and take public transport to ensure they don’t miss a minute of the premiership decider.

Public and AFL Reserve gates will open at 9.30am and the MCC Members Reserve gate will open at 8.00am, ahead of the first bounce at 2.30pm. A curtain-rasier match will commence at 10.00am, with pre-match entertainment from 1.00pm.

It is recommended that fans arrive at the MCG before 1.00pm, with those who arrive closer to game time risking missing the pre-match entertainment, the teams running out onto the ground as well as the first bounce.

The bag checks and wanding processes which have occurred throughout the 2016 AFL season will again take place at the stadium gates, and patrons are urged to allow plenty of time to get into the stadium.

Express lanes for patrons without bags will also be in operation and fans are strongly encouraged to avoid bringing a bag unless necessary in order to streamline their entry.

MCC CEO Stephen Gough said that the security measures, which are designed to provide additional safety and comfort for patrons, needed to be factored into fans’ arrival plans.

“We want to ensure everyone is inside the stadium well before the first bounce, but these entry processes take time, so fans do need to be patient and arrive earlier than usual,” said Mr Gough.

Patrons are advised to utilise public transport where possible, with reduced parking capacity in Yarra Park due to the AFL's Foxtel Footy Festival, as well a significant traffic congestion expected around the CBD and sporting precinct.

“We strongly advise fans not to drive to the MCG if they can avoid it, and to take public transport where possible,” said Mr Gough.

With limited parking availability in Yarra Park our message to these fans is to arrive early and consider parking in the city; then walk or catch public transport to the stadium itself."
