Sunday Funday in 2015 at the MCG

MCG turf access for footy fans

Sunday, March 20, 2016

Football fans have an even greater reason to wear their team’s colours and head to the footy at the MCG with the return of post-game kick-to-kick on the hallowed turf during the 2016 AFL home and away season.

The MCC has worked with the AFL to ensure fans are able to gain on-ground access after a number of Sunday matches to enjoy kick-to-kick on the ‘G with family and friends.

Footy fans will be allowed onto the MCG after eight Sunday games, with the first opportunity at the grand final rematch between Hawthorn and West Coast Eagles on Sunday April 3.

While matches in the wintry June-July period have been avoided in order to preserve the turf, every Victorian-based club will get at least one kick-to-kick opportunity (weather permitting) except North Melbourne, who don't play any Sunday games at the MCG this season.

“The reintroduction of kick-to-kick in 2015 was very successful and we’re delighted to be able to offer fans the opportunity again this year, along with some of the lowest food prices on offer at any Australian stadium,” said MCC CEO Stephen Gough.

“The MCG is Australia’s favourite patch of turf, and while we do need to balance access for fans with our heavy schedule of events to preserve the grounds’ condition, we know that people of all ages will relish the chance to be out on the surface.”

Sunday Funday continues

Children under the age of 15, who accompany an adult, will again be offered free general admission to Sunday matches at the MCG.

“There is no doubt fans really enjoyed the chance to take to hallowed turf after matches last season,” said Travis Auld, AFL general manager clubs and AFL operations.

“We would like to thank our stadium partners for their commitment to kick-to-kick and appreciate them accommodating this initiative while also balancing the need to prepare their grounds to such high standards.”
