This Saturday night, the MCG’s exterior lighting will be put to use as it joins other landmarks around the world in celebrating the 70th anniversary of the United Nations (UN).
To mark UN Day, the MCG will be illuminated blue – the official colour of the UN – as part of a global “Turn the World Blue” campaign, which aims to unite global citizens by promoting the UN’s message of peace, development and human rights.
A list of the Australian buildings involved in the campaign can be seen on the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade website.
Other landmarks around the world to turn blue will include New York’s Empire State Building, Great Pyramids of Giza in Egypt, Tokyo’s SkyTree Tower, Leaning Tower of Pisa in Italy, Athen’s Temple of Zeus and Edinburgh Castle and Central Hall Westminster in the United Kingdom.
The MCG’s involvement in this campaign demonstrates how the stadium’s new technology assets, such as exterior lighting, can be utilised away from event day commitments.
If you are out and about in the CBD on Saturday night, be sure to take a photo of our blue landmark and use the hashtags #UN70 and #UNBlue.
