On Wednesday 11 November the MCG lit up red in recognition of Remembrance Day.
Every year at 11am on 11 November—the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month—we pause to remember those men and women who have died or suffered in all wars, conflicts and peace operations.Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this year’s Remembrance Day has looked a little different with changes to the traditional Poppy Appeal as well as the ability for people to come together for commemorative services.
Despite these challenges, RSL Victoria and the Melbourne Cricket Club's Military Veterans Group are encouraging Victorians to ‘Remember to Remember’ – whether that is by taking a moment of quiet reflection, or donating to the Poppy Appeal and planting a virtual poppy.
2020 also marks 75 years since the end of the Second World War.
The Club and the MCG have a particular connection to the Second World War, with the ground being requisitioned by the Commonwealth during the conflict. From 1942 to 1945 the stadium was occupied by the US Army Air Forces, the Royal Australian Air Force and the US Marine Corps, with more than 200,000 military personnel calling the ‘G home.
The Club is privileged to support Remembrance Day, and encourages all Australians to remember those who gave their lives in service to our country, those who returned home injured or ill, and those who bravely serve our country today.
Lest we forget.
