A sea of red in full song
Some of the most famous soccer teams in the world have graced the MCG turf over the years, including Manchester United (1999), Brazil (1999), France (2001), Greece (2006), Argentina (2007) and this year’s trio of Real Madrid, AS Roma and Manchester City.
However, we can safely say none has created a spine-tingling moment to rival the rendition of You’ll Never Walk Alone by Liverpool FC fans before its match against Melbourne Victory on July 24, 2013.The popular club anthem was belted out in unison by the 95,446 crowd clad in Liverpool red, before captain Steven Gerrard sent them home happy with a trademark goal in a 2-0 win over the local side.
After the match, it was the stirring pre-game song that had everyone talking.
"I want to put on record a huge thank you to people of Melbourne and Australia. The You'll Never Walk Alone at the beginning was a real tear-jerker," Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers said.
The crowd figure eclipsed the previous MCG mark for a soccer match of 95,103 on May 25, 2006 when the Australian team took on European champions Greece before departing for the FIFA World Cup.
